GeoJSON files containing the public rights of way of Wigan |
|
The council of Wigan provides a web page where you can click on "Rights of Way" and that will take you to this web page. Now click on "View Full Details". That will take you to this web page. This new web page has a "Layers" area with three links that are labelled "Infrastructure", "Bridleways" and "Public Rights of Way" (meaning Footpaths). Click on either "Bridleways" or "Public Rights of Way" and then click on "Download". The new version of the web page allows you to download their Bridleways/Footpaths data in CSV, KML, Shapefile and GeoJSON formats. If instead of clicking on one of the Layers, you click "View API Resources" you will be offered the URL for "OGC WFS". Clicking on this takes you to this web page. This is the Capabilities file for Wigan's WFSServer. Using the information in that file, you can download the data in various formats. I didn't get the Shapefile download to work. But I was able to download in GML32 format. I used this URL to downloads the Footpaths data and this URL to downloads the Bridleways data. The Council also provides information about public rights of way on its "public rights of way map". You can see this map by clicking a link on this web page. It may be that their map uses more up-to-date information. An authority's Definitive Map is the authoritative source of their rights of way. The details of the public rights of way network contained in an authority's data are for information only, and are an interpretation of the Definitive Map, not the Definitive Map itself, and should not be relied on for determining the position or alignment of any public right of way. For legal purposes, an authority's data does not replace their Definitive Map. And changes may have been made to the Definitive Map that are not included in their data. The authority's data contains Ordnance Survey data © Crown copyright and database right 2024. Attempting to view this data with more detail than 1:10000 may produce an inaccurate rendering of the route of a public right of way. The "Custom License" link on this web page say the data is made available under the Open Government Licence v3.0. So it's possible for you to use this data provided you give an attribution. Elsewhere on this web site, there is a web page about how this web site provides the public rights of way of Wigan in KML format. That web page explains how I've augmented the basic KML with additional information.
I've converted this augmented KML into GeoJSON.
Besides giving the longitudes and latitudes of the route of a public right of way,
each entry in the GeoJSON also has a name and a description.
The following GeoJSON files are available:
Because some of these GeoJSON files are large,
the GeoJSON is also available in a large number of smaller files.
Each smaller file has information about public rights of way that are in a
square that is 0.1 degrees longitude wide
and 0.1 degrees latitude high.
For example, the file 24W534Fo.json
contains details about the Footpaths that are partly/wholly in the
square that is west and north of -2.4 degrees longitude
and 53.4 degrees latitude.
The latitude values for Wigan range from 53.44 to 53.6. And the longitude values range from -2.75 to -2.41. |
